Tarot Isn’t About Memorizing Card Meanings: It’s About Intention and Intuition

When the focus shifts from memorizing keywords to developing a relationship with the cards, tarot becomes easier to understand and much more intuitive to work with.

Most people begin learning tarot believing they need to memorize the meanings of all 78 cards before they can read them correctly.

That assumption is what makes tarot feel difficult for many beginners.

Tarot was never meant to be a test of how well you remember keywords. The cards begin to make sense when you start developing a relationship with them.

Instead of trying to recall definitions, you begin noticing the imagery, symbols, and impressions that arise when you sit with a card. Over time, that relationship strengthens your intuition and changes the way tarot is understood.

Why Intention Matters in a Tarot Reading

Setting an intention means deciding the purpose of the reading before beginning. Instead of pulling tarot cards and trying to figure out what they might mean afterward, the reading begins by identifying what guidance or clarity is being sought.

This creates direction for the reading and helps focus the message that emerges through the cards.

Taking a moment to pause and set that intention helps create a grounded space for insight to arise.

Learning Tarot Is About Building a Relationship With the Cards

Over time the cards begin to feel familiar. Certain images, symbols, and expressions stand out. The artwork becomes something you interact with rather than something you are trying to decode.

This relationship develops alongside intuition.

Many tarot learning methods begin with a list of keywords and meanings for each card.

That approach never aligned with how I learn. Starting with someone else’s definition and then trying to interpret the card from there always felt backwards to me.

Looking at the card first and noticing what stands out allows the imagery, symbols, and expressions to create impressions before checking any guidebook meanings.

After sitting with those impressions, the traditional tarot meanings can be reviewed to see how they align with the energy that was picked up from the card.

More often than not, the themes match what was already sensed. Each time that happens, it strengthens trust in intuition and deepens the relationship being built with the cards.

Over time tarot stops feeling like something that needs to be memorized and becomes something that can be worked with through experience.

Every tarot card offers an opportunity to practice this process. Taking time to sit with the imagery allows deeper insight to emerge.

This month’s card offers a powerful example of how tarot invites reflection and awareness.

Tarot Card of the Month: The Devil

The Devil card is often misunderstood, but its message is closely connected to awareness.

In the traditional imagery, two figures appear chained to the pedestal beneath the Devil. Looking more closely, the chains are loose. This detail suggests the restrictions are often self-imposed, connected to patterns or attachments that are ready to be released.

When The Devil appears in a tarot reading, it can invite reflection on where something may be creating a sense of restriction or attachment.

Recognizing those patterns is often the first step toward releasing them.

Meditation for Releasing Patterns and Attachments

Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Take several slow breaths.

Place one hand over the heart and set a clear intention.

I release what no longer serves my highest good.

Bring to mind a pattern, attachment, or situation that has been creating a sense of restriction.

Visualize warm light moving through the body and gently loosening the hold that pattern or attachment has on you. With each breath out, imagine that energy releasing and drifting away.

Allow the space that remains to fill with clarity and freedom.
